Manchester United has confirmed the addition of eight players to their Manchester United Champions League Squad via the B-list. These registrations come just before the team’s opening league phase fixture against Sabah this Thursday. This match marks the club’s return to continental competition for the first time in nearly three years, following a disappointing group-stage exit during the 2023/24 season.
Strategic Use of the B-List
While Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro were notably absent from the initial 25-man A-list submitted last week, their exclusion does not prevent them from participating in European fixtures. UEFA regulations permit the registration of players born on or after January 1, 2005, provided they have been eligible to play for the club for at least two consecutive years since turning 15. The B-list remains flexible, allowing clubs to submit updates as late as the day before any given match. By utilizing this rule, the club has ensured both Mainoo and Yoro remain available for selection.
Academy Prospects Included
Beyond the two senior stars, six academy players have earned spots on the B-list. The group includes left-back Harry Amass, central defender Daniel Armer, midfielder Jim Thwaites, and forward Shea Lacey.
The squad update also features Jack and Tyler Fletcher. As the sons of former United midfielder and current staff member Darren Fletcher, their inclusion highlights the ongoing development of talent within the Old Trafford academy.
A-List Adjustments
Not every young player qualified for the B-list under current UEFA criteria. Ayden Heaven and Tynan Thompson did not meet the specific registration duration requirements to be included on the B-list. To maintain their eligibility for European competition this season, both were instead named on the primary A-list.
Eligibility and Squad Rules
The club’s management of these lists mirrors their approach to domestic competition. Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro were also left off the official 25-man Premier League squad list earlier this season. Much like the European B-list system, their omission from the senior league list does not hinder their availability, as both players qualify as Under-21 talents under current league rules.
